This was our first real snow hike and first time using snowshoes and what better place than Humphrey's to try it out. Perfect weather for the summit ascent with bright sunny conditions and minimal wind. We started on the ski run heading on Jim H's route from GPS. No skiers out yet as the lift would not be open for over an hour so we continued to the spot where the route connects up with the sign in register. Then on the trail for short distance until we reached bottom of the Dutchman Glade route. From here it's straight up slope to the crash site. Made our way through the crash site and shortly after that started to hit the tree line. The last 500 feet is open and snow started to get patchy so at this point it was micro spikes to the ridgeline. Once on the ridgeline it's only about 1/2 mile to the summit. Again only patchy snow with very little post hole conditions so relatively easy walk up. Very nice on the summit....surprised to find not much wind with only slight breeze. After enjoying the views continued down the ridgeline back to top of the Dutchman Glade route. Even though there was little wind on the summit the ridgeline was a different story. Pretty cold so hiked quickly to get down off the ridgeline and down to treeline. Amazing the difference just 500 feet below the ridgeline with very little wind so we stopped and had some wine, cheese and crackers from the our perch. After the break we headed back down the route and out the ski run. Awesome day on the mountain!
