At the mine, I continued W, a first for me, hiking a quarter-mile to a little saddle with a 4-way trail junction. The trail N looked interesting. Apparently goes up to a high saddle between two prominent peaks. But, with daylight running out, I took the S route to the #100 Christiansen Tr and headed back toward the TH. Found a flat, open area and set up the tripod, taking a dozen or so photos in all directions just after sunset. The palo verdes are in their yellow splendor now and the hum of working honeybees is almost deafening in places. I figure the blooms are just past the peak period. Everything else has lost color and is hunkering down for summer's blitz. Saw Gambel's quail, white-crowned sparrow, mourning doves, and, judging by its silhouette on a saguaro, a cactus wren. Desert cottontails too. Trails busy in the hinterlands. Counted 7 hikers and 3 bikers back in there. Usually, it's one or two. Closer in I ran into a pair on horseback. Beautiful evening. |
