This is the first time I've ever hiked in Flagstaff. Heard good things about this trail including a review from Arizona Highway Magazine. First thing that surprise was the ride up the mountain to the trail head - Narrow dirt road inches from the edge where if another car is coming can be quite interesting and scary. Certainly wouldn't recommend a passenger car. It could probably make the trip but at what cost. Once arriving on level ground you are at Lockett Meadows where you will park. Never being here before we didn't know where to park. After we found a parking spot about 1/4 mile from the trailhead we made sense of the parking It seems to be divided into day parking and reserved camping parking. As it was a beautiful Sunday day, parking was scarce and we wound up parking about 1/4 mile from the trail head.

Depending on what article you read the trail is 2 mile each way or 4.25 miles each way. We assumed it was 2 miles each way we were wrong - or were we? We were hoping to get to the Inner Basin. I took my GPS and when we got to about two miles we saw our first building and by no way did it look like the beautiful meadows we were aiming for. So we kept going - then we saw another building about 1/2 mile away - still no meadow - this was about 2.5 miles into the hike. Finally we asked someone who was coming down and was told that nirvana was about 1/2 mile away. Finally about 3.1 miles from the trailhead we were there. A little shack -that said Inner Basin - altitude 9792 was waiting for our tired feet. Now apparently you can go further - much further and higher but after what we thought was going to be a 2 mile hike became a 3.4 mile hike - this was good enough for us.

To recap - expect a hike of just over three miles to get the real "Inner Basin". Is it worth it? Absolutely!! The leaves were starting to change so go there quickly!
