The hiking was nearly perfect until about three-tenths of a mile from the the summit. Then things got pretty nasty for a minute, or several minutes to be more accurate. People were praying to Jesus, Blanco was dodging gravel size hail, Karl and Kathy were slipping and sliding and I was heading down hill fast with Cup and a couple of other lovers of life. The intensity of the storm slowly diminished as we made our way down the mountain. However, we never felt overly comfortable among the heavy claps of thunder and sporadic lightning that accompanied us nearly all the way to the trailhead. Although, we did stop a few times to soak in the surreal winter like scene that was created by the robust hail storm, I mean we had to take a few pictures, right?
A solid day for hiking overall, missed the summit by three-tenths of a mile, but lived to fight another day, no one dwelling over that slight short coming. The dogs rebounded nicely in time to terrorize several squirrels on the way down and we had a nice run in with fellow HAZer Toddak and his son on the way up. |
