I hiked it clockwise with Tracey's daughter so she can learn how to use Route Scout. (All I will say about that is I'm glad I don't own an iPhone)

Something like the other day when we met kingsnake, we heard someone calling out to us. He was traveling CCW. It was his first time hiking in this area and was following the trail using a map he got at the Superior visitor center. He said the last part he had just gone through was like a jungle and he wasn't sure if he was still on the trail. With a few tips to stay on track he was on his way. When I told him about HAZ he said he been to it for some information. I didn't ask but I'm guessing he didn't register, although after telling him more about it, maybe he will.

We did some extra wandering but had no trouble staying on track through the jungle area. We started the hike just after a short sprinkle and completed it before the heavy rains arrived.

Unbeknownst to me, Erin had parked right next to an ant mound, and while I was taking off my pack I was bitten by a large black ant. And as I look down there are a dozen or more ants climbing up my pants with a few more underneath, so I really did have ants-in-my-pants. I brushed them off as carefully as possible so as not to get the whole batch biting together, had Erin back up her car so I wouldn't have to stand on the mound again, then proceeded to check for more ants. Already I had a 2" diameter swelling around the bite. I thought I got rid of all the ants, but a few miles up the road I was bitten on the thigh as well. The instant I felt it I unzipped the knee and got the ant before it really got a hold of me. This will turn out to be a good thing... if you can call being bitten a good thing.

Now, an hour after getting home I have clear exudate literally pouring out of the skin, like heavy constant sweating, only it's not sweat. It's been doing this for almost 45 minutes and now is doing it from the ankle to 8" up my leg. Kind of weird, because I was bitten by a bunch of fire ants almost ten years ago and never had fluid like this... just the excruciating pain lasting almost 2 months.

At least this time, once I put aloe lotion on the site there is no pain... just the running clear fluid. Guess I better keep drinking fluids to make up for the loss, huh?
On the drive home we encountered a huge dust cloud just before Florence Junction that was blown up just ahead of heavy rain & high winds. I hoped the heavy rain would make it here but it didn't.
