Since I'd been neglecting the Teapot Mountain Quadrangle I figured what better place to begin my Fall peak-bagging season. So I picked a half-dozen peaks, spent time on Route Manager to plan the routes and set off with a rough idea of where I'd begin the day.
Since I had a peak on each side of the high point pass on SR 177 I figured it was as good a spot as any to begin. After parking on the southern 'Check Brakes' pull-off I chose to begin with Peak 4172 on the east side.
Thankfully the spot to pass through the fence was next to the Jeep so I passed through before putting on my pack. Since it was so close I thought it would be a quick 90-minute hike and I'd be on to #2 for the day. It still appeared that way when I reached the summit. But after taking in the views I decided to take a slower sight-seeing round-about return trip. following the drainage to the north.
That worked until I began following the drainage when I was confronted by impassable vegetation. Ok, since I had been casting eyes across at the ridge across the canyon I decided to climb just far enough to avoid the brush. But by time I had climbed partway up I figured I might as well continue up to the ridge and follow it all the way across. And that's what I did, descending to a saddle and followed a contour line back to the Jeep.
A great hike, awesome views and weather to go along with it, with the high topping out at 72°.
