I wanted to hit up Picacho Peak, but our oldest has a bit of a fear of heights and is still recovering from the last time we went several years ago .... So, we decided to hit up South Mountain instead. First time for us on the "other" South Mountain (Ma-Ha-Tuak). Started from the triangle parking lot where the road is closed. Hiked a 1/2 mi or so on Bajada to the actual trailhead, then went up Alta from there. The first part of the hike was a bit drab, but got more interesting once we crested the ridgeline and the views opened up. I really liked the traverse along the ridgeline. A few of us wanted to hit Maricopa Peak, so we did, while the others waited a bit. Views from the Peak were outstanding. Saw a couple of hawks(?) circling up in the thermals between the two ranges. Came across one or two other groups on the trail. On the way back, we opted to veer off into the wash for the last section and take the road back to the car, thereby cutting off some of the circuitous route at the end. Great way to spend family time and get ready for Christmas! |
