We both commented multiple times that this hike is pretty underrated - it really is a gem! You get meadows, aspen groves, old growth pine and Douglas fir forests, vistas of the west and south slopes of the Catalinas, running water, granite hoodoos, graceful descents and steep climbs. Its just about everything we hike for - the only thing missing is isolation. Wait-unless you go on a Tuesday - then you've got the mountain to yourself! We saw one other trail runner, and he was there and gone in a flash (and to be honest, provided his own visual interest if you know what I mean).
Tons of water up in the WOR right now - streams all flowing and pools all full. It made for buggy stops, but it wasn't unbearable.
We stopped our break short and skipped the detour to Lemmon Pools thanks to a happy smattering of thunder. Luckily, we watched the storms rage all around us, but the rain didn't start overhead until we got to the cars. Nothing motivates my uphill like thunder, though!
Interesting things to note: I had 2 new pieces of gear for this trip... A new phone, which I used for all the photos (I'm impressed really) and new boots. Big, heavy serious boots. I bought them for doing trail work - so its nice to have a chance to break them in. But transitioning from trail runners to serious boots takes more than 9 miles, I'll tell you that! |
