As my very thorough partner Tibber said in her earlier description of this date, it was a mixed bag of wonder (oh! how beautiful! and wonder (I wonder why the pumpkin anyone would want to do this). However, it did meet my primary goals of getting us away from the crowds of Superstition front country trails and seeing some really beautiful desert.

The initial walk up to Massacre Grounds was really spectacular. The canyon was full of water, wildflowers and views. I'd never seen the grounds before, so that was a real treat to me. Then we descended off the east side and the desert took over again. It was thorny, brushy and rugged - everything the Superstitions should be. There were times when walking on top of the brush was easier than through it. The great thing about navigating in the desert - the landmarks are always right there...not hiding behind trees.

The descent through the First Water tributaries was delightful, and might have been less stressful if we'd planned the timing better. However, I definitely agree that the direction we did this hike (counterclockwise) was the right choice. It would have been much tougher climbing up some of the pour-offs in these tributaries.

Overall, I'd do it again, but I'd be more prepared. However - when I think of how many times I've said this over the years, I just have to smile. Being prepared...maybe a little overrated! :D
