Mistakenly headed due south out of the parking lot and couldn't find the trail in the ravine. Backtracked and started over - pretty obvious where Aspen starts in hindsight. The detour cost me about 10 minutes.
Aspen Trail rules early in the morning. The sunrise was great and the ferns are alive and well. Made good time up to Lemmon. It's my first time back on Lemmon in a long time and I forgot how beautiful it is up there. Headed down Lemmon #5, the ferns and excellent views continued. Spotted a turkey just before hitting the junction with Sutherland Trail.
WOR was quite balmy by 9am. The humidity didn't help. I skipped the cool rock face at the head of Romero Canyon - I wanted to see the view again but decided to push through the heat first and foremost. The four miles from Lemmon #5 to Marshall Saddle was a slog. Ironically, the last push down Marshall Gulch was way worse - my legs had reached their limit for the day and I had to take numerous breaks.
One of my favorite hikes in recent memory. The Catalinas are something special. |
