In Flagstaff for a few days for a water reuse conference, brought the family along, and some extended family. The original plan was to do a shuttle hike starting at Snowbowl, up Humphrey's Summit Trail, then take the Weatherford down to Schultz Tank. But with the monsoon in full swing this week in Flagstaff, it didn't seem like the best idea to be that high on the mountain. Specifically, the forecast for this day was a 60% chance of rain around 1pm, right about the time I would be on the upper reaches of the Weatherford. Instead, we decided to just hike a few miles on the Kachina Trail and then head back.

Once we started, it occurred to me that we could still do ashuttle hike like I had hoped, only it would be me doing the Kachina Trail instead. At the two mile mark, we decided it was a good point for everyone else to turn back while I headed for Schultz Tank. Up to that point, the skies were very blue and clear, but the second we started to hike opposite directions, a cloud appeared above us. No more than 10 minutes later, I heard a rumble of thunder.

Fortunately I finished the hike without any lightning storms, although that rumble of thunder kept hanging around, making itself known. It didn't seem like any rain or lightning strikes happened nearby most of the day, but the later in the day it got, the darker it got near the ridgeline. I probably could have done my original plan, but it probably would have been a little stressful keeping an eye out for the clouds rolling in and listening to the thunder.

Once I got back to Schultz Tank, my wife hadn't arrived yet, so I took a quick lunch, and then started hiking Schultz Pass Road back until I caught them coming the other way, thereby adding a little more distance to my hike for the day.

Staying in northern AZ all week, looking forward to a couple more nice hikes this week, out of the extreme heat of the Valley.
