| no partners | | While the weather is still nice, I decided to take the family out for a Sunday morning hike. We also invited our friends and their son. We went out to the Hieroglyphic Trailhead and took the Lost Goldmine Trail, avoiding the crowd of people that were forming a line along the Hieroglyphic Trail. My intent was to make the hike a minimum of 6 miles. My son just turned 10 and my daughter will be 12 this summer, time to start ramping up the mileage a bit to match their abilities.
At the start of the hike we noticed the sign for the Cougar Trail, which I had never seen before. We decided to stick with our plan to hike the Lost Goldmine Trail, but later once we saw how the Cougar Trail meets up again with the Lost Goldmine Trail almost 2 miles further, we decided we would take the Cougar Trail back to make it a loop.
Just after we hit the 3 mile mark, we turned around and had lunch at one of the very few shady spots along the trail. There’s also another trail I found at about the 2.8 mile mark that heads south and doesn’t have any marker. On our way back we took the Cougar Trail and found that it heads quite a bit to the south before heading back north to the trailhead. Our total mileage for the day was 6.8, which is a new record for my kids. I got back to the parking lot a good 15 minutes for everyone else did. I had stopped a few times, taking my time taking pictures and they hadn’t caught up. At one point I became convinced that they probably turned back and took the Lost Goldmine Trail to the trailhead. By the time we were done, everyone had pretty much used up all their water.
This hike was also a trial run for my new Camelbak Fourteener, which is very nice. I packed it full with extra water for all of us, and once we were done with lunch, it was already empty.
Lots of flowers blooming in the desert. First time this year I’ve even seen some saguaros starting to bloom. |
