Got maybe my first hiking start before 6am that I can remember, only to be greeted very quickly by the sound of a barking coyote very nearby in the brush next to the dirt road. I never spotted him, but he kept barking the entire time I was in hearing range. I don't know if he was upset by me, but he did sound aggravated. Gave a couple quick howls along with the barks. Once I got past the gate, I didn't hear him anymore. Not long after that along the Old Horse Trail, I saw two bulls again like I saw last month along there.
I took the Old Horse Trail out as far as it goes, along where it goes back onto a dirt road and picks up again going east. I passed the junction for the Snowbird Trail and continued going a little further east, expecting the trail to end at a dirt road, as my map indicates. instead, I found two more signed trail junctions, one is called the TD trail, the other one is called the Outer Limits Trail. I first hiked a bit on the Outer Limits Trail, finding that it soon turns south. I headed back to the junctions and then followed the TD trail a bit, which heads north. Then I went back to the Snowbird Trail, only to find that it soon junctions with a trail called the Transition Trail, which also heads north. I decided to double back again and take the Snowbird Trail, which finally headed west again back towards my car. I was already at the 5 mile mark at this point, so I didn't want to go much more than 10 miles with the heat of the day looming. the Snowbird trail was probably the highlight of the day since it gave some minor elevation gain for some better views along the flats there, at times allowing me to compare the trails and roads I could see with my map and my GPS tracks from previous hikes.
Once the Snowbird Trail got to a dirt road, I took that to the Old Horse Trail again and then took a section of the Mohave Trail, which went north and connected to the K Trail. I noticed a few more signs for different trail names, but they don't seem to necessarily have much rhyme or reason to them. For example, the Kiki trail intersects the Old Horse Trail, but it seems to be either a part of the Snowbird trail, or a connector trail from Old Horse to Snowbird. I also found a sign for the Secret Trail along the Snowbird Trail, but it seems to just direct you to follow the wash southward towards Old Horse. Nah.
Got my 10 miles in and got out before the heat got really bad. I have a few more mapped sections of trails I want to do (Tech Loop, upper half of the Mohave), and then I think it's best to explore the uncharted trails from the Carney Springs Trailhead.
Not many interesting opportunities for pictures today. Best chance I saw was while driving east on 60, the sun rising behind the smoke from the fires made it a very bright red color, but soft enough for a good pic. That was gone by the time I got to the trailhead, however. |
