| no partners | | My Girlfriend and I did the Phoenix Summit Challenge. We did the PHX4, which is 4 summits, 15.4 miles, and 3.544 ft. elev. gain. Although we had done all these trails before, this is the first time we attempted the challenge so we settled on the 4 challenge. Previous years we had been doing the Las Vegas RnR 1/2 marathon and they always seem to be the same weekend. Since we are taking a break from running we were able to secure 2 spots in the challenge, from what I hear it sells out within minutes.
Didn't know what to expect or how easy/hard it would be. Like I said, we had done all the trails before, but never back to back in the same day. Lookout mountain was first up. had a nice sunrise view on the way up. Shaw Butte was next, the nice wide trail here helps out with the PSC crowds. Piestewa is the hardest of the 4 and it was 3rd up. I will mention that I did Piestewa with a friend the Tuesday before and we got to the top in 41 mins, today however, 1 hr 5 minutes so I was definately feeling it. After Piestewa we headed to Holbert the last trail, had some bagels in the parking lot, rested a bit and then headed out. We both felt really good going up Holbert. Also the cut off time requires you to start Holbert before 4:30pm, we started at 2:05 so we were doing good on time. Dobbins lookout was extremely crowded, since all the different challenges end on this trail, but it was a fun environment still.
We both really enjoyed it, I'm glad I had the chance to do it. I completely plan on doing it again next year, only decision is whether to step up to the 5 summits or not.
