When we got to the trailhead, all we could hear was rushing water--fun--and we started hiking a few minutes before 7:00 in a light drizzle, but nothing too bad. The water was flowing pretty good at the first crossing, but we were able to rock hop our way across without wet feet; same for all the other crossings the entire way up. We got a fair amount of hail on our way up too, but nothing after after the saddle. Since this was Alison's first time out here, from Fremont Saddle, we went out to the pine tree viewpoint before heading down Cave Trail. Near the top of Cave, we heard and saw, to the south of us, a very large (significantly larger than a car) boulder crashing down the west wall of Peralta Canyon. If anyone had been below on the trail at that point, they probably would have had several worrisome seconds before that boulder came to a stop at the bottom. We stopped at the caves, then continued down. Devil's Slide was slippery, but after that, everything else was fine. Definitely a cold, windy day, but still enjoyable. The parking lot was not even half full by the time we finished around 10:00. |
