No school today, so I took the kids on a hike. I figured they would like Garden Valley loop, and they did. Started the loop counter-clockwise a little before 10:30. I think they ate a snack every 15 minutes, sigh...

They had a great time searching for pottery at the junction with Black Mesa. They wanted me to take a picture of every piece they found, so we were there a while. Garden Valley was muddy, and I discovered today that walking through mud makes Wyatt gag, so that was kind of entertaining. He also won't walk through horse droppings; when I asked him why not, he said "Because I am the king." So I had to lift him over every spot on the trail.

Shortly after Garden Valley, we encountered a woman who had sprained/broken her ankle. She was with a partner, and they had already called for help. The dispatcher had told them that the helicopter was refueling after finishing a call near Cave Creek and then it would head their way. Since they had cell svc, weren't alone, and help was coming, the kids and I continued on our way. Sure enough, the helicopter flew over us about 15 minutes later. My kids thought it was great, and were entertained by the continued flyovers for the rest of the hike.

First Water Creek had water in it, including enough in one spot with no way around where I had the kids take off their shoes & socks to wade through it. They liked that part, and if it hadn't been so cool out, I would have let them play in the water. As we arrived back at the parking lot, it had been taken over by rescue vehicles--really? three ambulances and two fire trucks for an ankle??? The kids were super excited to see the helicopter up close, because of course it landed right next to where my car was parked--I'll be washing all that dust off tomorrow.

Fun day with the kids, and they were pleasantly tired for the drive home.
