My oldest friend's youngest son was just sworn into the USMC. His Dad and I did the same thing in May 76, met in boot camp and have been best friends since then. Andrew has until early October to prepare for the hardest 13 weeks of his young life. He asked me to include him on some of my hikes for the new few weeks. Just the motivation I needed to get off my duff and do some hiking myself!
I chose See Canyon as a starter hike. 7 miles, nearly 2000 feet of elevation gain, tree covered and not a lot of traffic. One of my favorite hikes. He had no problem getting to the top so I suggested we extend the hike to take in some views. We followed the General Crook trail east for a bit then headed off trail SSW to a point I hoped would provide some nice views of the canyon we just hiked up. It did. We took a break to catch up on some food and fluids, chatted a bit about what he might expect to see in boot camp, then headed back the way we came.
It was a sunny to partly sunny day for most of the hike. It started to cloud up during the descent but rain never threatened. We saw eight hikers on the trail and a few dozen people playing in Christopher Creek near the trailhead.
We stopped at the now cash only 260 Cafe for some very good cheeseburgers before finishing the drive home. Great hike, as always. |
