An awesome sunset, rainbows and thunder clouds filled the sky. At about 8pm I was near Wiggins Crossing when a huge black bear scampered across the road right in front of me. Dozens of elk roamed and I even saw 2 gray foxes. I set up camp and enjoyed the lightning show to the south and east. This a.m. was absolutely beautiful at 60 degrees and sunny. I headed back to See Cyn and thought it would be nice to have lunch atop Promontory for my birthday. Started west on Highline for 6 miles before the Promontory junction. This is a really scenic segment of Highline. Great views, good tread and diverse flora. Passed a pair of day hikers and that was the only human contact all day. Promontory was kicking my pumpkin this time but about half way up the clouds blocked the sun briefly which was a nice boost. Passed up my usual lunch spot atop the butte and moved on down to a sunny little rock outcropping with even better views. Walked across the butte via FR'S 76 & 76B and to my surprised didn't see anyone camping or driving ATVs. Filled my pack with water bottles and beer cans as I went. Very pleasant road walk. Shortly after 11am it got warm and thunder started rumbling in the distance. See Canyon was a nice shaded break from the direct sun I'd been in all day. Finished off at a very quiet See Cyn TH with JJ's jeep being the only other vehicle in the lot. Great day in Rim Country! |
