| partners | | We did as a key exchange between Carney Spring TH and Lost Dutchman SP. Good groups, 3 going west and 4 going east. Got the last parking spot at Carney at around 8:30 a.m. on a Friday no less! Lots of people on the lower trails but very few along the ridge. I had my 2-13-2014 track and the official on my gps but still managed to get off trail before getting to Carney Spring, Bushwhacked back over to the trail since I didn't want to lose the elevation. I edited that mistake out of the track, but you might notice a very straight line as the track passes Carney Spring. That little boo boo added at least 1/2 mile to my distance.
I had forgotten all the bad parts of this hike, especially all the scrambling along some parts of the ridge. It seemed much harder than 4 years ago (couldn't be that I'm 4 years older). We got out of Siphon Draw just as the sun was going down.
This is a spectacular hike. Great views to the north and south, unbelievable rock formations, a great peak (which I did not climb). However, the hike is harder than it looks on paper. Count on the hike taking longer than a normal hike with these stats, and take an extra liter of water over what you would normally take. Once you commit to the ridge, there are no easy exits. Route finding is challenging. Not sure I would do this with just a map. Take a gps with a loaded track from HAZ, and know how to use it. |
