Had a blast today! Checked out Black Canyon Spring and found a very nice Spring And beautiful canyon. Below the spring was plenty of flow before hitting a very rocky exposed canyon section with some nice waterfalls and slick rock sections. Just enough water to keep it interesting but nothing too crazy. Water flow became more intermittent near the intersection of Burnt Canyon. And extremely brushy and cliffy.
Once Burnt Canyon entered water was flowing again and the canyon floor was smooth sailing thanks to the cows. Wanted to keep heading down Black Canyon especially with all the water but wanted to be out early today.
Continued on our planned loop up Burnt Canyon and it was the surprise of the day! Had flowing water basically up it’s entire length before we climbed out. Some pleasant waterfalls and nice sized pools and we were happy campers. There was such a variety of terrain in this canyon with beautiful pine forest and grassy meadows to rocky and exposed narrow sections with big cliffs. Felt very similar to the Ash Canyon Trail #539. Definitely worth a trip back in the future. Love the Black Hills and how deceivingly rugged they are!
Ps wildlife was solid today with 4-5 deer, a gobbler, and a Fox!
