| no partners | | Have always wanted to check out Big Bug Mesa and today was the day! It turned out pretty awesome to say the least. Looking at the Goodwin fire maps it showed that Big Bug Mesa was definitely in the fire perimeter so I was worried what it would look like up there. At least where we hiked I can say that there was fire up there no doubt, but it was minimal damage and appeared to have been a very beneficial fire burning up the dead stuff. The farther east we got (near Crystal Spring) there was some spots that seemed to have stronger more intense fire but nothing too bad. I'm not sure about the rest of the mesa but where we hiked seemed to be beautiful healthy forest. Excited to come back later this summer to see how the rest of Big Bug Mesa faired from the Goodwin Fire.
Anyway back to the hike. We parked on the forest road just after 5 corners followed that up onto the mesa and went offroad from there. It was hot at first but once we got in the woods it really made a difference. There was a strong breeze as well which helped keep my do and son cool. We didn't really have a goal in mind just wanted to explore. We got near crystal spring (and based on google maps I'm positive there must be a significant spring there with all the green trees) and wanted to get to it but as we climbed down the drainage realized it was impossible. Had to finally call it quits at a huge 30-40 foot dryfall. Had lunch and the way back turned out to be fantastic. The forest was beautiful here and the way the sun was shining thru the trees made it very scenic. Scored a sweet big ol deer shed, and had a nice close encounter with a coyote. Tons of deer sign and old bones everywhere. Definitely lots of wildlife up there. Saw just 1 deer though.
Was a beautiful little hike and didn't see another soul all day. Can't wait to be back! |
