| no partners | | After selling some antlers in Camp Verde I wanted to do some hiking in a area I wouldn’t normally go to otherwise.
Ended up being a great little hike in a surprisingly scenic canyon with no shortage of water throughout.
Not far into the hike I came across a Bull elk bedded down inside the canyon who at first I thought was unaware or downright not concerned with my dog and I but it’s when he attempted to get up is when I noticed what was going on.
He had a gaping open wound on his back that was a bloody mess, I thought it was a bad archery shot at first but after closer examination and info from a friend I now realize it is a injury the elk has been dealing with for quite some time and more than likely came from a mountian lion or coyotes.
The moral dilemma of putting him out of misery crossed my mind as I was armed but during that time he was able to stand up and stay up on his own which was my last sight of him so I decided to leave him be in peace and let nature take its course.
No more than a quarter mile up canyon I came across two curious coyotes who were hanging out around a old elk carcass and I’m sure picked up the scent to the nearby dying bull.
For such a short random hike it was sure filled with action and a unique situation in nature that I don’t see everyday.
Just another reason to get outside and explore because you just never know what you’ll encounter. |
