Near the start, there was a sign stating I was on the Great Western Loop, then later there were signs saying the road I walked was 677 (at least I think that's the number; my memory's not perfect and I didn't take any pictures of the road signs, and I don't feel like looking it up ).
Shortly after I started, I reached Sycamore Creek. It was flowing well, but I was able to find a way across without getting my feet wet. The road crosses the creek three times and at the second there was no good dry way across so I put on my sandals (I was actually prepared for water crossings) and continued on with them until I had climbed up out of the canyon where I put my shoes back on.
After about 1.75 miles, I crossed a gate and the road forked, I took the right fork to where the first geocache is hidden, then cut across to the left fork and followed that jeep trail the rest of the way out.
It was really nice hiking along the jeep trail. I didn't have to deal with the whole cross country avoid the catclaw and other pokey things routine. The trail isn't used often so except for the rocks (and there were a lot of them), the ground was fairly soft and spongy. The terrain was basically grassland with some juniper and scrub mixed in so the views were big.
At the highpoint, near where I turned around, I could see snow on Pine Mountain. I was at 5500' and Pine Mountain peaks at 6800' so the snow level was maybe 1000' above where I was.
At my main target geocache for the day, I had a nice view of Cabin Spring below, Granite Peak beyond it and IM Peak to the south. The view down the canyon to the SW was just spectacular. After finding the cache, I drank some Gatorade, and had a Snickers bar before heading back.
Besides Sycamore Creek, I didn't check any water sources out. I assume there's water below where I turned around at Cabin Spring. There was also a large concrete tank with solar panels off a spur road maybe 5.75 miles out to the SW of the road I followed that probably has water (why else would the solar panels be there?). |
