First time hiking in this area. The air was cool and there were patches of snow on the ground, but the sun was out and it was pleasant for hiking. The hike follows the creek through a first of mostly juniper trees. The creek had water flowing and it was really pretty. After a couple miles the trail crossed the river and it goes from first to canyon. Many saguaros on the north facing slopes above the canyon including a crested saguaro.

After crossing the creek again we reached the junction with the Skunk Tank trail. It starts out as a single track trail and it just goes up up up. Finally there is a gate at a sign for Skunk Tank and the trail turns into a muddy and wide dirt road going up at a more moderate slope. But that doesn't last and it gets steep and keeps going up. After climbing forever it finally starts going back down. Good views along the way of snowy mountains. Lots of squishy mud and cow pies along the trail mean you have to watch your step.

A great hike. I see why this one is written up in the books.
