A loop up trail #4, down the road to the Upper Oldham, and back to the #4 on #23, the Sunset Trail. Planned on a longer loop, but no way do I think that was feasible for me. Spent a lot of time just hanging out on the summit, too.

Aside from wanting to hike this, I checked out the logging on the road. I thought it looked decent. Lots of genetic junk being left as stock, but it's better than it was. Compare thinned to unthinned, and I think there is a dramatic improvement. Wait 10 years. I wish they would leave the best pines, but some of those get taken, too. I have a preference to take far more of the trees and regenerate the forest entirely, selecting for the best, and initiating the stands with lower stocking densities to create larger trees, but that will take 50 to 100 years.

I don't know the plan to remove the down material. Piles to burn, or broadcast? If they do piles, I hope there are some broadcast burns in the next 5 years, too.

Long term, this is a great step in the right direction. After the Schultz, Woody, Hardy, and a few others I have forgotten, I am sure, Flagstaff is purely lucky that what happened in California in the fires 2018 where towns burned, didn't happen here.

Oh, and it was very windy for this hike. For July, that seems unusual. Felt more like June, and early June.
