Route Scout GPS Route Recorded on Route Scout View
We got started from Cedar Basin around 9:00am. From the road, we headed generally east, following a variety of cattle trails. Generally flat hiking to begin, which got steeper as we approached the southern ridge off Hellgate Mtn. We go onto the ridge at a saddle, then started to head north, then northeast up the ridge. Very steep, with loose rocks and poor footing, plus an abundance of cholla to avoid. Near the top, we skirted around to the east side of the ridge, then followed it north to the summit. The ridge up top was pretty easy, especially compared to what we had just gone through.

Great views and a nice breeze up top. What had started as a sunny morning turned into plenty of clouds with localized rain showers. Perfect weather. From the top, we headed east, then southeast, gradually down the slope. Much easier terrain, and we found some fairly distinct game or cattle trails to follow. Avoiding the cholla was much easier through here as well. From another saddle, we headed south down the drainage towards Garfias Wash. We were able to follow a good trail through a lot of this section too, but it was easy enough to just avoid cholla and head downhill without much effort.

It had started to rain just before reaching Garfias Wash, but it was short lived, so we headed east downstream just to see what it looked like. After less than half a mile, we reached a rocky spot where the wash drops down quite dramatically, forming a little grotto-like area. I've been wanting to bring my kids out to this area, but wanted to make sure they could climb down this section safely. After looking at it yesterday, they will have no problem getting through here on a future hike. After exploring around here for a while, we turned around and headed back upstream all the way to the road. Once on the road, it was a quick walk back to where we had parked.

Pleasant day with a fun little hike. I'll be back to do more hiking in this area.
