Was able to get a parking spot beside the store as someone was leaving. Easy to find the spillway after traipsing through the parking lot and by some campground picnic tables , briefly explored the meadow below released water area and then returned to the metal blue diamond marked trail At the end of the spillway heading CCW. Observed a picket line of retirees with fishing poles along the shore the numbers lessening as distance from the store increased. The kayak rental was also doing a good business, fortunately the hiking trail not so much so solitude came quickly. The trail is well maintained but you do have to focus some so not to trip over loose rocks and tree roots. Near the Rocky Point trailhead area ended up walking on use trails created by the fishing crowd rather than the blue diamond marked official trail. After making it around decided I needed more exercise to justify the drive and with no other prepared plan summoned up my inner Forest Gump making an about face and did the loop again clockwise Not surprisingly observed the same pine trees and water all around, but did get a glimpse of an Eagle flying low, couldn’t get a decent picture between the trees. Still procrastinating about returning to the VOS heat and deciding a third loop might be considered went and picked up some snacks at the store and did a few more miles on the Rim Vista Trail. By now the dark clouds had moved in but no rain or thunder insuring pleasant conditions. Overall an enjoyable day up on the rim. |
