Woke up the next morning, packed up, drove a short distance and started on the trail west of KA Hill, there's no trailhead here but I wanted to do the loop CCW and get the hill out of the way first thing, so just found a spot to pull off the road near the trail crossing. Climb up the hill was slow and steady, 5yo had big feelings, eventually we reached the summit and had our first of seven thousand breaks. Downhill went better and we reached the logging camp and creek without much hassle. Creek was very dry except for 2 or 3 ponds, which was a real bummer, because the kids really like playing with water, and I didn't want them tossing rocks into a small pond that a lot of animals were likely depending on. Anyways, they liked the big canyon views, especially Vista Point, and we saw some climbers at the fork, which is always cool. The heat and dryness were a lot and the last few miles through Pomeroy was a slog. There was much rejoicing when we got back to the Jeep with ice water and cool snacks. Trail is in great shape, area is pretty (if dry and hot), and we only saw two groups of hikers on the trail. |
