| no partners | | It was a Saturday in June, so we expected it to be busy. It was. Leaving the east valley at 5:30 am was good enough to secure the last spot in the main parking area.
The forecast was for wind in Flagstaff, so naturally it was hurricane strength on the summit. More fierce than I’ve ever experienced up there. Coming down off the exposed summit required a lot of crouching and planning your next move in between gusts. We saw more than one baseball cap offered up involuntarily to the summit gods.
The return trip reminded me why this is my least favorite approach to the top is AZ, with 3 miles of 3 Rs at the end: roots, rocks, and rolled ankles. In sadder news, the ski resort has taken steps to discourage cutting off the last couple of switchbacks in favor of just descending the slopes. Everything is roped off and signed.
Still, a great day in the cooler part of AZ. |
