Huron Peak is in the Sawatch Range, and is about 3 miles west of Missouri Mountain and 6 miles south of La Plata Peak.
We did the standard route up the Northwest Slopes, starting and ending at the Clear Creek/South Winfield TH.
It is a dirt road to the TH off of Highway 24, between Leadville and Buena Vista. A high clearance 4WD vehicle is needed to go the last 2 miles to the TH. You could walk those 2 miles, and there is only about 300 feet of elevation gain in the 2 miles, so it wouldn't be all that onerous to walk it. However, after the hike I was glad that we did not have to walk those 2 extra miles, as we were able to get to the 4WD trailhead.
The hike went uphill right off the bat, so there was no warmup. Until you get to the treeline you are hiking in a forest, so there are no real views in this section. The views open up once above the treeline though.
The hike wasn't all THAT hard, but there was a good bit of elevation gain in a relatively short distance. There were quite a few switchbacks which definitely helped.
It was a clear day and the smoke that was in the area in the prior couple of weeks was gone.
This is not a bad hike, but it is not amoung my favorite 14ers of the 17 Colorado 14ers that I have done. |
