What an amazing sunrise! And with the moon over the snowy mountains. I arrived at the Cruz de Ferro at 7:00am, so it wasn't terribly crowded. Very quiet as people took photos and laid stones and notes at the base of the cross. I felt a surge of sadness as I approached, knowing what all the stones represented. When you see "In Memory Of" it tugs at your heart. Just so you know, it's more or less tradition for peregrinos to leave a stone or note which you've carried at the base of the cross to signify getting rid of your burdens. I had carried a small stone with me that had an inscription on it.
More up and down today. You start down the hill before El Ganso, with really loose, rocky terrain. Easy to turn an ankle. The view you get when you start down is incredible. You see the city of Ponferrada far below, and the drop in the trail reminds you of a 600-point Dow Jones drop. It's about 7k down to Molinaseca and all downhill. I had ideas of originally stopping at El Ganso, slowing my pace, but figured why not get all the way down to Molinaseca?
Good choice, because something major happened between El Ganso and Molinaseca. I happened to be walking in a wooded area and came upon a couple hikers. I gave the usual "Buen Camino" and started talking with one of them. Turns out she was from Seoul, so we had common ground since my chorus director is also from Seoul. Very outgoing and positive...we walked the rest of the way to Molinaseca together. This is where I got to know an energetic 45-year-old named Yosefina. Something seemed to click. She had another 20k to go, but we swapped contact info. There's a chance we'll meet again before we finish.
Was God at work today? Maybe another Camino Angel? Was the Camino once again "providing?" Stay tuned. |
