This was the third section of the Maricopa Trail that I've hiked. Actually have done several sections (South Mountain, Spur Cross) prior to focusing on the Maricopa Trail. I'm doing the MT in bits and pieces. What makes it harder is not being able to shuttle from the end of the hike back to where I'm parked. So I'm actually doubling my mileage. I'll get there, but it'll take longer. Since I can't get back to Spain to finish my Camino, this will have to suffice. :-)
This was more interesting than previous sections of the MT. More rolling, a little more up and down with better views. No rattlers, but did see a roadrunner and managed to get a good photo. Trail is well-marked, rocky in many sections. Took some time, but the temperature warmed to a comfortable level. I keep hoping to see critters...could hear coyotes in the distance when I started, but other than the roadrunner and covey of quail, not much exciting.
I can see there's a trail up Apache Peak, but I've read it gives out especially near the top. Probably some great views up there. It was exactly 3 miles from the trailhead out to the junction where you turn left to go toward Spur Cross. That made a convenient turnaround point. I can see the section of the MT from the junction to Spur Cross is going to be difficult. It's somewhat remote, and no parking in the area of the junction. |
