Day 5 : Cacabelos. I'm dedicating today to Jon, Alane, and Karla, who have made me "progressively" better. I'm sure they'll get the pun. :-) And yes, I'm making good progress. Started from Molinaseca at 7:15am, just cool enough to use my fleece. Someone was wondering about the width of the streets...you can see they're not very wide! Took some time getting through Ponferrada...had to take a rest break after 5+ miles. Found my second wind and continued on. Made another rest stop around 11:45, started out of town and found myself in vineyard country. LOTS of small vineyards...I'm getting into the Bierzo area. I hadn't gone far when I noticed a trailside food truck, and heard a familiar loud voice. Nah...it couldn't be!!! But it was. Yosefina! Time for a pit stop! She was chowing down on a delicious-looking hamburger, chatting with a Spanish man and German girl. We relaxed for about half an hour, enjoying the forest environment and a nearby hammock. Had some great conversation on a slow walk to Cacabelos about 5k down the trail. Its amazing how quickly our conversation has developed. I stopped in Cacabelos; she needed to cover another 10-12k. She starts later and walks slower, so we agreed to continue tomorrow. We're playing a game of tortoise-and-hare. I'll start up the hill to O Cebreiro probably day after tomorrow. That's a pretty good 8km climb. I'll have a few KMs in before starting up so will probably stop part way (La Faba). Outside of Ponferrada, today was gentle enough, even covering 14.5 miles.

I've been incredibly lucky with the weather. Five days in and no rain. Good hiking weather, cool in the morning to start (40s-50s) and warm during the day (into the 70s). I'm still ahead of schedule, doing about 12-15 miles each day. Beautiful country, each day gets a little more beautiful. And it's fun meeting people from around the world. You never know who you might strike up a conversation with. Some days you have a lot of "me" time; other days you have "we" time.
