Some short but steep hills through vineyard country between Cacabelos and Villafranca. Lots of vineyards. Once I left Villafranca I entered a narrow river valley with the Rio Valcarce as my companion. I must've been in between hikers most of the day...I could see several ahead and several behind, but rarely with me. Finally reached Trabadelo where I'll stay at Casa Susi, an Australian-run albergue I've read good things about. Only 12 beds, all singles, with access to the river and a communal dinner. Susi is a wonderful hostess. They keep two beds open for walk-ins, as long as you arrive when they open at 1pm. I made sure I arrived early so I wouldn't get shut out.
Ran into Kerri, an Australian hiking acquaintance from a previous albergue, who's also staying here. That told me I made the right choice. This one just feels good!
I'd noticed a guitar in the corner while we were eating dinner. I don't play, but hoped someone would. No luck. After some had crashed for the evening, several of us were sitting around and I mentioned the Tremble Clefs, the Parkinson's chorus I sing with. So I gave them an a cappella performance of my "Do You Hear the People Sing?" solo from Les Miz. I think it even got a passing grade!
Will likely take it slowly the next 2 days climbing the hill. I've had an eye on the ascent to O Cebreiro since I started researching the Camino. It's a pretty good 8km climb. |
