| no partners | | My first hike of the high country season. I live in Flagstaff for a seasonal job during the summers. Decided to start my higher altitude hikes with an easy peak. As you can see from the photo, Mormon Lake is pretty full this year. A few patches of snow linger in the old growth forest above 8,000 feet. In some places they cover the trail, so you have to either walk over them or around them.
I patted myself on the back all the way up the mountain, "Wow, amazing, no aches or pains!" But then, partway down, my right knee started aching quite a bit. Sigh...
After the hike I drove over to Mormon Lake Village, to find out if there is easy access to the lake for kayaking, but I didn't see any. There is definitely enough water in it to put a shallow-draft boat in. But I couldn't figure out an easy way to get to the water's edge. As far as I could see, you'd either have to lower the boat down a bluff, or walk it out at least a quarter mile across some flats. And there is a lot of private property along it, as well. I'm going to make some calls... |
