As we were eventually heading uphill, it finally started to get interesting. The rocks are pretty, and the initial uphill was fun. I could tell my friend was not enjoying the cholla as we headed across the mostly flat ridge towards the next uphill. The next climb was much steeper, with poor footing. About 250 vertical feet from the summit, we reached a spot where every time I reached up for a handhold, my ribs were hurting. I played around with three different routes for about 10-15 minutes to see if any were easier. As I started to head up again, I could hear “I don’t know why I always let you talk me into this feces” behind me. I had a feeling “because it’s fun” was not going to be the correct answer, so I suggested that we turn around at that point instead of going any further. The hike back down was tedious, but easier to follow. |
