Took a right after the airport.
There is a sign that says private property and it is but its Forest Road 235 and after a mile goes onto National Forest.
At the fork, 1.5 miles from byway, there is a sign that says Paloma to the right. I have always gone this way.
Took the road to the right this time.
-
The road rose steadily and steep.
You'll need a 4WD in places. Its very steep and rutted.
I would suggest having side tread too.
-
Along the way there was a Wildlife water station and some watering tanks made of old tires.
I also found a pile of what looked like slag from a coal furnace.
Maybe someone melted the ore? Looked like a mix between coal klinkers and melted glass.
-
The road ends at an abandoned mine. The lowest shaft is big enough to walk into upright.
There is water at the entrance.
The saddle is about 800 feet in elevation above this and along the way there were a few other horizontal mine shafts.
I hiked out of the wash and headed up the ridge to the left.
It took about 30 minutes to get to the saddle.
I was surprised to see so many stumps at the top and expected to see a road on the other side.
More than likely the trees were used in the mine.
-
The saddle is really grassy and broad and nearly flat.
To the left there are some cliffs and I set out for those.
At the base there was a lot of trash.
It looks like it was a lookout since it faces south and there is a clear shot to Mexico.
-
AND - someone brought out the best with a glass jar of Hellmans.
Also found an empty jar of Nestle coffee. Nearby there was a can with holes punched around the sides. This is an easy stove and will warm up water with a very small fire or even a motive candle.
-
I came back down the way that lead to the mines and got buzzed by a bee for for about 50 yards. Made really good time for that and the next 100 yards. It's like it was waiting for someone to come by. Hiding. angry and aggressive.
-
Lunch back at the truck.
Brought back a couple of glass jars.
-
At the bottom of the mountain I checked out a couple of tanks and headed home for a nap. They were a bout half full
I plan to head back and check out some of the cliffs I saw on the way back.
very good workout.
I would say that 25% of the trees are alive.
The views are amazing. The color of the landscape changes from brown to bright red. |
