Heading on up we were immediately distracted by all the views but a beautiful Parry Agave and Cypress tree drew the most attention and photographs. A fellow from Wisconsin was passing by and offered to take a group photo, which you know I don't like but my companions said "yes". So in exchange I gave him some additional trail suggestions. We continued on our way still taking in the beauty around us. At the wash we ran into a couple bikers that were wondering where Chicken Point was as they couldn't find it. I told them they should have turned left at the Chapel junction they came from. Their vehicle was at the Chapel so I suggested they go get it via the TH we had just come from so as not to get locked in.
From here it is a gradual up to get you atop the little mesa below the Two Nuns. There was some more flora and trees that we observed as we made our way closer to Chicken Point. Just below Chicken Point there was this agave that was all buds except for one flower. And then to its left was an agave all bloomed out; quite the contrast between the agaves. We made our way on Chicken Point after photographing the agaves every which way .
We saw the two formerly lost bike riders coming up Chicken Point and then head over to the Hogs Trails. It was a lovely early evening at this point as we ate our snack on the rock at the far end of Chicken Point which was soon interrupted by a Pink Jeep Tour driver who asked us to leave so her clients could get their picture taken. She wasn't very nice about it but we obliged.
Continuing to gripe about how we should have responded we started our way back still taking in the scenery, both land and flora. We noticed this one blob of rock that was still holding on to the side of the lower Nuns formation. Everything else around it was the bare bedrock. We saw the Chapel in the distance thru the trees and a couple homes. I happened to look back and catch the moon just coming out from behind the eastern mountain. Well we went into full paparazzi mode as the moon was bright, beautiful and BIG. We all got some great shots as we tried to make the most of the moment to an already great hike.
We hiked on and soon you could see a little of the Earth's shadow to the south behind Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock. This is a great hike which only has a couple short rough sections. There are lots of little off-shoot trails so you do need to pay attention. It was getting pretty dark by the time we got back to the TH where I talked for a moment with the two bike riders again. They had found their way and were able to complete the route they wanted.
We were unable to get into Mole for a Mexican dinner so we went to Chipotle across from the Hyatt but it was closed at 8. Plan C we headed up 89A west and stopped at Olde Sedona Bar and Grill where I've eaten a couple times and we had a great dinner. The reason I'm telling you about Olde Sedona is they have a Homestyle Chicken dinner like no other and we were quite surprised and delighted. FYI they are open until 10PM. Also, it has been very crowded up here especially on the weekend. We very seldom have been able to get right into any restaurant. The mask requirements have mostly been optional so that was good at least.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
