I got out there to find that the Telegraph Fire had started and wasn't too far away. I decided to go ahead with my planned hike despite how close it was. where I parked there was another vehicle, so they weren't evacuating everyone from this area yet.
I hiked the Apache Tears road down to Arnett Canyon, then hiked that out to its end by Perlite Road. I had a track that I downloaded that headed further south, but it turned out to be mostly a bushwhack and I was already getting kind of close to the action. the haze from the fire was getting more prominent. I headed back up to where I parked and hiked east on the Pinal Panther City LOST segment about a mile and a half and headed back. On the way back the helicopter action was beginning to pick up as they were loading up water to take over to fight the fire. Got some glimpses of the smoke and the fire from a safe distance, the telephoto lens came in handy once again. Right at the end I saw a rock with a bunch of pottery sherds on it and I saw a few more laying near it. Very surprising to see that in such and open and semi developed area. |
