Started from the main staging area and headed north on the Pemberton Trail, then turned right onto the Verde Trail, which now goes all the way out to and intersects with the Pemberton Trail. Then I took the Verde Trail to its end and turned around. On the way back I took what is now a spur trail (which used to be part of the Verde Trail) to the North Trail and hiked the north half of that loop and the Chuparosa Trail back to the Pemberton and back to the car. Before the North Trail, I saw a hiker coming the other way who warned me of a rattlesnake he saw in a bush that buzzed at him and scared him. He also mentioned it was the first one he ever saw and just moved to AZ a year ago. We talked for a bit and headed on our ways.
Most of the hikers and bikers I saw were very early, beating the heat. Did see one biker who finished right after I did. The weather wasn't too hot for me. The early start and being a little bit higher in elevation seems to have helped a bit. Saw some smoke from a fire in Fountain Hills towards the end of the hike. Looks like it might have been up near the Eagles Nest area. |
