| partners | | I wanted to hike the Brittlebush Trail because I read the description in the Charles Liu 60 Hikes book. But the southern trailhead has been indefinitely closed for well over a decade now it seems due to smuggling activity, or something like that. The only option was to go to Margies Cove and hike in from there. I wasn't about to do a 20+ mile hike, especially with the weather warming up. I decided to head in to the junction with the Brittlebush Trail and hike a small portion of that. I hadn't hike with Andy in over a year, so I asked him if he was interested. Since he's still dealing with repairs on his vehicle from his previous week's misadventure, he was in.
There is one small segment of singletrack that heads south from the trailhead. then it follows a dirt road that eventually fades into a wash, which then fades into a slot canyon. The further up we got, the sandier the wash got, which I didn't appreciate a whole lot. The scenery is the typical Sonoran desert. A lot of the mountains nearby were similar to Piestewa Peak.
At the junction we got onto the Brittlebush Trail and headed south on that for a little over a mile. That was another nice section of singletrack. I looked at the maps and it looks like maybe at some point it may also turn into was since it goes between a narrow pass of 2 mountains. This north section of Brittlebush looks very similar to the southern part of the San Tan park.
On our way back we did a little short cut from Brittlebush into the wash and saved close to a half mile. The clouds kept the sun from getting too hot, but by the end it was still a little toasty. I finished nearly 300 oz of water by the time we finished, so it was a sneaky kind of heat. Andy was spent, but made it home without significant incident. Nice to hike with friends again as life gets back to normal. |
