FR 221
This is the third and next to last time for this area. I’ve covered about everything in this area except the place I got way too close to a bear a few years ago. It’s next on the list.
-
The ridge behind the rock column looked interesting but ended when I couldn’t climb up a break in the ridge. I was however able to come down right behind the column and get some good pics of the nest.
On the other side of the cliffs behind the column was a very narrow and steep way up to the ridge. It was the kind of steep where you don’t recover from if you lose control.
-
View from above the cliffs was really good. All the way up the Elephant Head. The smoke is mostly cleared out.
-
My original plan was to hike this ridge till it met up with another Forest Road but it took a really steep turn up and the clouds weren’t cooperating. I headed down into the side canyon to the East for some shade and water. Twenty minutes later the clouds came along and I headed up the ridge to another FR. The ridge to the east of this road is FR222 and leads to Border Marker 127. There is also a border patrol tower here.
-
This road leads to Calabasas Campground and Mud Tank and I decided to follow it back until I could see the column again. Then I would know where I could go back down. I decided to try my luck with some cliffs to the West and found a narrow wash with a lot of trash in it. Blankets, food, clothes. Very well hidden. This canyon leads to RT. 39 and I have seen groups of people running with backpack or hiding. Maybe waiting for their ride?
Checked out some side washes along the way back to the truck.
-
Talked to some firemen who said the fire was contained on the US side but they had to stick around because the fire on the Mexican side was still going strong and they were afraid it would jump again.
Ruby Road is in really good shape right now
9:14 – Left the truck
9:26 – had to head back into canyon
9:33 - behind column on the way down
9:50 – top of cliffs above column
10:18- rested in canyon for 20 minutes waiting for clouds
10:58 – Top of wash with trash in it
11:06 – out of the wash and headed to truck
11:17 – back at the truck
-
It was too late to have started this one. I’m glad I found a short cut back down. |
