Most of this one was on a road. That made it go faster than usual. I have driven this road several times and needed to just stay in 4wd as soon as I hit Fresno canyon.
The plan for the day was to head to the Peck Canyon Wells and head toward Hells Gate but the water was too deep. I took the road to the right that heads up the hill instead of crossing the cattle guard into Peck Canyon. This road has some steep muddy places and I was concerned about getting back even in low 4. It was too late to turn around after the first one so…. Onward.
I stopped at the cattle guard because the road turns into a creek bed and sometimes it is nothing but bowling ball sized rock. From here it was about 600 feet to Mesquite pump. Lots of reddish brown water her and all along the creek.
There is a turn off to the left and instead of going I took this. I didn’t realize the road continued and was excited to take a new direction. The turn off is .98 miles from the truck and the road ends about half a mile later. I went about 1.5 miles after that
Found a couple of cool columns.
The cliffs had water dripping through them.
There was good cow paths the rest of the way too.
Passed at BP truck on the way in. Looked like it turned around the same place I did.
All in all a great hike! |
