Got out an hour later than I wanted but it was still in the low 60’s.
Took a walk out that way last weekend to do some recon. It was too hot to try and make it all the way.
As I headed down the saddle I realized that it was a LOT steeper than on the elevation map and on google. Almost turned around and went back for a easier hike.
But
I’ve planned this for two weeks so.. went for it.
Once I got down into the canyon there was a pretty good cow trail. I wish I had found it at the top. It made the trip back a lot easier.
Took exactly an hour to get to the dam. And only about 10 more minutes to find Lower bellota tank. This is a similar rock dam to the one near the well in peck canyon where Peck and Ramanote meet.
Also, like the one in Aztec canyon. Very narrow and I almost missed it.
Rock wall in a very narrow part of the canyon it’s filled in though.
I couldn’t get to the rock/wall/dam because of the pool of water at its base.
I tried going to the right of the dam and I’m glad I did. Really cook chut about 20 feet up and very slipper and steep. No problem getting up it but coming down was a LOT faster than I intended.

All the views were amazing.
The grass was chest high in places which make it hard to negotiate through the roly rocks on the way down.
I was surprised that there was a tank built right above Bobby tank. It looks like its there to slow down the water and it also looks freshly dug or repaired.
There is a road from Bobby tank up over the next ridge and down into what I think is bellota canyon.
Took 3.5 quarts of water and drank 2 of them on the way back. The last 100 yards out of the canyon were insanely steep even though it was a cow path.
Back at the truck it was 87 degrees.
I have some days off and am hoping that I can get in another canyon hike tomorrow. I think I remember seeing a mine on a hike a couple of months ago.

Complete solitude. Not even a BP drone or airplane. |
