Breadloaf Ridge – Wise Mesa
This is a ridge that resembles a loaf of bread and a pretty easy mile from the South side of the road.
7:53 – Left the truck
8:02 – Saddle to the South with a gate to cross back over.
8:27 – canyon below breadloaf – Bee Tree = Change of course again.
8:50 – Edge of Ridge to East
9:03 – West end edge and rest.
9:34 – Back in the canyon – Spotted a different way to come back.
9:41-balanced rock and upside down shelf
10:40-back at truck

46 degrees this morning.

Parked by the second cattle guard and went down the West side of the fence until I heard the cows. Hopped the fence and continued on the safer side.
The goal was a little over a mile from the truck and took about an hour to get there in actual hike time.
Other than an occasional animal trail this was just a short cross-country trek.
Lots of stickly things.
I took a bath in OFF this morning because two weeks ago some chiggers hitched a ride home with me.

The cliff/ridge is about 300 yards from end to end and anywhere from 20 feet to 30 yards wide. Nearly level. No paths at all. It looks like there are two breaks in the cliff that could be negotiated just for fun.
-
Took a nice break on the edge of the cliff at the West end and checked out Atascosa and some cliffs and caves near Pena Blanca through the binoculars.
Lots more to explore!
-
Came back a different way and found some more balanced rocks and a really cool shelter rock.
-
Weird thing….
Covered about 2.5 miles in about 2 hours and I reached the road at the exact same time as someone drove by. We talked about hiking in the area for a while.
Kinda happenstance when you think about it.
Edge of nowhere and run into someone like that.

All in all, a good one.
This hike should put me at 200 miles for 2021 so far.
Tomorrow I’m planning on hiking the last part of Ramanote canyon that I have been saving for cooler weather.
