10-12-2021 Ramanote – Last Leg
I’ve hiked Ramanote Canyon from beyond the Arch to the Window where it intersects with Peck Canyon.
Not all at once. Today was the last section. It included some balanced rocks and a small cave.

8:37 – left the truck at the top of Wise Mesa
8:47 – Top of the Cliffs – Small break
8:56 – In the canyon creek bed
9:08 – Bottleneck in canyon by red rocks
9:20 – Below the cave – 10 min break-wind was terrific
9:30 – Headed up to cave
9:36 – spotted a smaller cave hidden behind brush. Flat place inside about 3x4 feet
It wasn’t too far out of the way.
9:43 – Big cave – There has been a recent cave in.
10:04 – Headed down
10:17 – in the canyon and headed back up
10:30 – 5 min rest in shade
10:45 – back on top
10:54 – back at the truck

2 hours and 13 min total time
Covered >2.10 miles
Elevation gain 855
Elevation loss 855

50 degrees with gusty wind clouds and thunder – Got back to the truck and it was 54 degrees clear and no wind.

I parked to the north side of FR4151 between the Atascosa Corral and where Gasline Road turns south.
It looks like this is the new place to shoot guns into the canyon.
From here it gets steeper and steeper until it’s hard to stay upright until you reach the top of the cliffs.
I’m going to guess the cliffs are between 40 and 120 feet depending on where you are around the rim.
From the base of the cliffs to the creekbed is insanely steep and I came down the bottom part on my bottom part.
-
On this trip I headed East in the canyon for a few hundred yard to make sure each leg of my trek is overlapped. However I didn’t go as far as where I came across the bundles of Pot. From here the bottleneck seemed like only a few minutes back and then soon there after I was standing below the cave wondering why I bothered doing this.
-
The climb up to the cave started on bare red rock and gradually turned to a steep mixture of gravel, grass, briars, Cats Claw and burrs. Really nice view across the canyon to Wise Mesa.
Rested about 20 minutes there and came back down the way I went up. Mostly.
-
I didn’t stop for a break until I was about halfway to the Top of the cliffs.
Found a pretty good cow path that stuck around for most of the trip up. It disappeared at the top of the cliffline.
About a third of a mile back to the truck from here.
-
No lunch this time and a quart of water was plenty.
Got within about 50 feet of a hidden deer when it jumped up and scared me.
The steepness is akin to the angle headed up to butte 4833.
Everything out there is designed to scratch, tear, poke or puncture the human body.
