The first .4 miles is a gradual uphill trek to the creek, then .1 miles along the creek to the falls. The upper falls can be hard to see without getting your feet wet but on this trip the water was low enough that with a little bit of rock hopping it was visible. If you travel to the Great Sand Dunes National Park Zapata Falls is a must see side trip. If you have the time Zapata Lake is a 4 mile hike up in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. |
