This is a grueling 3 mile round trip up a 600 foot sand dune. I think it compares to the Incline at Colorado Springs except easier on knee joints. The views all along this trail are spectacular, Blanca Peak (14400) to the Southeast and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains to the North and East. The wind was blowing pretty good as we approached the peak, previous tracks were covered up pretty fast. Coming down was easy, just head down hill toward the start point. This hike is a bit easier if you do it just after a rain, the sand is a little more packed. The Great Sand Dune National Park is up there in the top 5 parks I have been to, It is really different and not a lot of people. |
