I'm writing this 10-20-2021. On my way home, Day 1 of 3. I dropped Mia at the airport and headed south. This time I planned a two-nite venture rather than the only one-nite I did on the way up August 1st. It's always a pretty drive out of Gt Falls to Helena as you pass through a canyon in the Craig area and where the Dearborn River floats to the Missouri. You follow the Missouri River for much of this part of the trek.

I stopped at a truck stop in Butte and finally found the Huckleberry Beer I was looking for. I then stopped at the Rest Area south of Butte and the I-90 to catch a 20 minute nap. It's a lovely rest area. I continued southward not sure how far I would go this day; very unusual for me not to have a plan let alone a reservation. I've wanted to check out the Craters of the Moon in Idaho as my parents stopped there as part of their drive from CA to the farm in MT in 1953 (guessing they drove the 93 back then). However, it appears it's 80 miles in the wrong direction so I ended up stopping at the Rest Area at Blackfoot, ID, where they have this hike available; I didn't know that until I went in.

So I decided to check it out as it's something I've wondered about each time I've passed through. It's all sidewalk so I didn't even need to change shoes. The walk takes you to an upper level and all along the way there are interpretive signs; very nice ones at that. You can observe this very rough topography interspersed with some desert-like flora. There are significant cracks and holes in the earth.

I think I ended up taking the trail the wrong way but it worked for me. I forgot to set my watch to hike so it started recording a tad late I think but I'll got with what it reported. I did take a lot of movie and included the interpretive signs. It was a great way to take a break and I recommend the stop... if it's not too hot.

The Snake River used to flow across the northern portion of the Snake River Plain, but now flows along the southern margin of the Plain. The river was pushed there by successive lava flows.
The Lava Trails traverse the desert of the Snake River Plain through contorted landscapes created from multiple lava flows. These Hawaiian-type lava flows are associated with the stretching of the earth’s crust. Hell’s Half Acre lava flow erupted about 4,100 years ago and is 222 square miles or 162,000 acres. The lava flowed at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, had the consistency of molasses, and traveled at speeds up to 30 mph.
@Charger55 did this on the Northbound side in 2013 [ triplog ]
High point was 4861, low 4818 and took me 2203 steps. Starting temp was 73.3 and 26% humidity finishing at 3:50PM.

Here is the link to the 2-part video as it includes my drive from Gt Falls to this point, the hike and then to Beaver, UT the next day.

While sitting at the Rest Area I pulled up hotels in Pocatello and after about 20 minutes, found the Clarion as it had the best reviews of the cheaper hotels so I made the reservation online (they give you a slight price break for online).

I know some of you like the homestead videos and I did do a small hike up to Hoot 66, so named by my cousin, but not really enough to justify a triplog. I included the link to the harvesting video. Mia and I rode combine for a round: [ youtube video ] and thinking back, I don't think I ever rode a combine before; I guess because I was usually driving truck.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
