I decided to hike to 2 peaks in the range -- West Mountain Peak and Peak 5040. West Mountain Peak(elevation of 7,680 feet and prominence of 3,640 feet) is in Utah and is the highpoint of the Beaver Dam Mountains. Peak 5040(elevation of 5,040 feet and prominence of 360 feet) is the highpoint of the Arizona portion of the range.
I had intended to also hike to the Scrub BM, which is the second highest peak in the range. However, the road to the summit looked really crummy and I did not feel like doing a long road walk. So I decided to drive further into the Arizona Strip and hike to the Black Rock Fire Lookout instead.
West Mountain Peak
I drove to within about 1/2 mile of the summit and walked the rest of the way up to the antenna farm on top. You'd need a 4WD vehicle to get where I parked. Views were good at the top, but a hike on a road to an antenna farm isn't particularly exciting. I saw the benchmark and 2 reference marks at the summit.
Peak 5040
This turned out to be a fun off-trail adventure. This was a short hike, but it was a steep and slippery climb. The first part of the hike was on a road, but the rest of the way to the summit was all off-trail -- no social trail or cairns on this one.
Part of the ascent was ridiculously steep and slippery, with a bit of class 3ish climbing not far below the summit.
Views at the summit were great. There was a Lilley-MacLeod summit register that they placed there in 1988. There were very few entries in the logbook, and I was the first one to sign it in 2021.
I did not want to go back down the steep slippery slope that I came up, so I descended to the east a bit and dropped down to the north from there. The descent was steep, but the footing seemed better than the way that I came up.
This is a fun peak to climb!
Black Rock Lookout
This lookout is on the way to Mount Bangs from the east. Coming from St. George 4WD is not needed, but I'd want to at least have an AWD SUV to make the trip.
I parked at a locked gate and made a short, easy road walk to the lookout. The lookout cabin is a cool one, and there are great views to be had.
Distance and elevation gain for the 3 hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of the 3.
West Mountain Peak: 1.1 miles and 505 feet of elevation gain
Peak 5040: 3.4 miles and 1,470 feet of elevation gain
Black Rock Lookout: 1.7 miles and 351 feet of elevation gain |
